Signed, Numbered and Dated by Hush
HUSH is a British mixed media artist who trained as a graphic designer at the Newcastle School of Art and Design. He worked as a toy designer in Japan, where he developed an appreciation for Japanese culture that continues to inform his work today. He combines the aesthetics of street art with motifs from Japanese iconography such as geishas and female manga characters. In his signature works, HUSH lays layers of vibrant wheatpaste patterns and graffiti over delicate stencils of women's faces.
These women are dressed in vibrant patterns that breathe new life into an ancient Japanese tradition. Upon close inspection of the works, one can see that Hush has created a seamless blend of old and new. Traditional Japanese colours and prints are used right alongside modern graffiti fonts cleverly disguised as fabric.
His unique approach to portraiture blends motifs from Eastern and Western art, resulting in abstract works that appear both glamorous and down to earth. HUSH's art spans a range of mediums, from outdoor murals to large and small-scale paintings, screen prints and, more recently, NFTs. His work has been exhibited in galleries across Europe, the United States and Australia.
