About the Item
Jack Vettriano OBE, (1951-2025) was a self taught Scottish artist most famous for his best-selling image, The Singing Butler. Vettriano gained acclaim for his film noire 1930s glam style. This is an offset lithograph of Vettriano’s work ‘Mad Dogs’ dated 1996, re-created as a poster from the Portland Gallery, London. His paintings often invite narratives about relationships between beautiful women and the men watching them, wearing fedoras and suspenders.
Vettriano gained acclaim after Jack Nicholson purchased three of his paintings in a sell out exhibition in Hong Kong. His most famous painting sold for $1.3 million dollars, skyrocketing Vettriano as the most sought after and successful artist in Scotland. In March 2025 he passed away in his home in Nice, France.
Jack had a Scottish father and an Italian mother, and grew up in a mining town in Fife, Scotland. His life might have spent in the mining business, but his girlfriend bought him a present of paints. He took to the Fife Coast beaches, painting beach scenes, boats and lovely women and girls dressed in late 1800s/early 1900s attire in impressionist style.
By late 1980s he developed his uniquely identifiable style that brought him fame and fortune. At that time he started painting under the name Vettriano, his mother’s family name.

Jack Vettriano
Jack Vettriano, born Jack Hoggan on November 17, 1951, in Fife, Scotland, is a renowned contemporary Scottish painter. He grew up in a working-class family and left school at 16 to become an apprentice mining engineer. His journey into art began at the age of 21 when his girlfriend gifted him a set of watercolor paints. Vettriano taught himself to paint by studying books and replicating their techniques. Initially signing his works as "Jack Hoggan," he adopted his mother’s maiden name, Vettriano, in the late 1980s. His career took a significant turn in 1989 when he submitted two pieces to the Royal Scottish Academy’s annual exhibition, both of which sold on the first day. This success led to more exhibitions and the subsequent rise in his popularity. Vettriano’s style is often characterized by its narrative and cinematic quality, frequently depicting scenes of romance, mystery, and noir glamour. His most famous work, "The Singing Butler" (1992), captures a couple dancing on a stormy beach, and it became one of the best-selling art prints in the UK. Despite commercial success, Vettriano has faced criticism from some art critics who regard his work as populist.

Charles Ross Kinghan (American, 1895-1984) was born in Anthony, KS on January 18, 1895. A teacher, he moved to Wichita as a teenager and did sign painting for the Western Sign Works. He studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art in 1916, the American Academy of Art in Chicago, the Audubon School of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He was a pupil of Carl Scheffler, J. Wellington Reynolds, and H.A. Oberteuffer.
He taught at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He was an illustrator for McCalls, Good Housekeeping, Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, and many others, including American Artist magazine.
