An iconic poster realized after James Rosenquist for the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia, commissioned as part of the official Olympic Art Series.
Rosenquist, a central figure of American Pop Art, here combines surrealist fragmentation with dazzling modernist composition. The image depicts a figure skater’s eyes and lips dramatically refracted into sharp red and white diagonal shards, suggesting both the speed of skating blades cutting through ice and the fractured dynamism of athletic movement. The addition of blue dotted accents evokes falling snow, uniting winter imagery with Rosenquist’s distinctive visual lexicon.
This work exemplifies Rosenquist’s ability to merge advertising aesthetics, surreal distortion, and political undertones into a uniquely Pop vocabulary. Produced in 1984 for the Sarajevo Games, it is one of a small group of posters by internationally renowned artists—including Andy Warhol, David Hockney, and Cy Twombly—commissioned to celebrate the Olympic spirit through contemporary art.
