Jansem, Jean (French 1920-2013). SUR LA PLACE. Drypoint, 1964. Dalavez, page 48. Edition of 40 plus 10 Artist's Proofs. Signed in pencil and numbered 35/40. 13 1/2 x 10 3/4 inches, 270 x 350 mm; (plate), 25 1/2 x 19 3/4 inches (sheet). Very light matstain, else in excellent condition.
Jean Jansem (born Hovannnes Semerdjian in Armenia) in 1920. His family fled to Greece at the time of the Armenian genocide, and came to Paris in 1931. He was a successful artist from an early age with his paintings and prints being collected by institutions and private collectors. He drew inspiration from the works of Goya and Brueghel, and has been characterized a "miserablist," an artist who focuses on the unfortunate and the poor.
