The Cat's Paw (Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, Prince de Benevento & Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston).

Lithograph printed in black ink on white wove paper, 16 3/8 x 11 1/4 inches (415 mm x 286 mm), full margins. In very good condition with the numerals "206" written in brown ink on the top right corner. Light pencil inscription with the name John above the title in the lower margin. Printed by Alfred Ducôte, London.
Illustration in which a dog (Talleyrand) holds a cat (Palmerston) in his arms and tries to press its paw on a hot stove (Belgium and Antwerp). A satirical cartoon on the role of Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand, the French ambassador in London, and of Minister Palmerston, who participated in the negotiations at the London Conference on the independence of Belgium, October 1832.

John Doyle
John Doyle was one of the most famous and prolific illustrators of the 19th century in Europe who was born in Dublin, Ireland. He was active in London from 1822. For more than 20 years, in the first half of the 19th century, he produced an important number of political and social vignettes by the pen name H.B. the series Political Sketches is the most important series by Doyle. It includes 683 lithographs published by Thomas McLean between 1829–41. Doyle died at Maida Hill, London, on January 2, 1868.

Etching and engraving with hand coloring in watercolor on cream laid paper. 6 3/4 X 9 5/8 inches (170 x 244 mm), margins trimmed, image intact. Rubbing in the lower left image area obscuring the publishing information (which reads Published by Mm. Darchery, St. James Street March 11, 1783), scattered light foxing, corner loss, top left corner, well outside of image area. "SMP" collector's stamp in red ink on the verso (not in Lugt), and the name "Renier" and the initials "AR" in black ink on the verso. Colors are extremely fresh. Impressions of this work may be found in the permanent collection of the British Museum, and the Yale Center for British Art.
Ex-Collection of Anne & Ferdinand Gabriel (F.G.) Renier, reknowned for their inspriational collection of children's books and works on paper, now housed in the Victoria & Albert Museum.
