About the Item

Engraving by the French artist Jean Pierre Marie Jazet after the paining "The Signing of the Declaration of Independence, July 4.1776" painted by John Trumbull. The superb engraving was a gift of France to the Congress of the United States in 1832. In addition to the title of the print, the French inscription on the engraving gives a concise summary of the American Revolution (the revolt against George III for imposition of taxes and humiliating acts against the colonists, the uprising of the latter, their brilliant victories against the British forces). The description continues, "In order to re-invigorate the courage of the colonists, B. Franklin, J. Adams and a number of other Representatives put forth a plan for a Republic and on the Fourth of July the National Congress approved the Declaration of Independence of the Thirteen Colonies, a proclamation that was not recognized by England until 1783 following a long and hard-fought war." The dedication in French below the image reads as follows: "Déclaration d'indépendance des États-Unis D'Amérique, Juillet 4,1776 Le Roi di Angleterre,Georges III ayant accable di impôts et de vexations ses Colonies di Amerique, celles-ci se soulevèrent en mafse, et dans diverses actions que les Patriotes indisciplines soutirent contre les Armees Anglaises, ils obtinrent de brillants succès. Pour ranimer le courage des Colons, B. Franklin, I. Adams, et plusieurs autres Deputes,proposèrent un plan de Republique, et le 4. Julliet 1776, le Congres national promulgua la déclaration de l'Indépendance des 13 Provinces, acte qui ne fut reconnu par l'Angleterre qu'en 1783, apres une guerre opiniâtre." Framed with red, white and blue mats and Federalist style gold wood frame.
