Josef Ritter von Führich
Scene from The Life and Death of Saint Genoveva - Original Etching - 1830s

1830s

About the Item

The menace from "The Life and Death of Saint Genoveva" is an original etching artwork on Ivory-colored paper, realized in the 1830s by Joseph Ritter von Führic also known as Josef Ritter von Führich (February 9, 1800 – March 13, 1876), was a Bohemian-Austrian painter of religious themes (Nazarenes) and historian. This series of etchings were based on " Ludwig Tieck’s play The Life and Death of Saint Genoveva". Good conditions except for minor decoloration stain. Joseph Ritter von Führich was a well-known fresco painter and draftsman, he was active in Rome with the Brotherhood of the Nazarene, the preference was a style of drawing that employed expressive outlines and clarity of detail reminiscent of Albrecht Dürer and Raphael. Führich illustrated many religious-themed books, such as an edition of Ludwig Tieck's play The Life and Death of Saint Genoveva (1799/1800), based on a medieval legend about betrayed innocence. The play in which Genoveva is unfairly accused of being unfaithful by her husband, a character likely based on the 13th-century Duke Ludwig II of Bavaria. Robert Schumann's only opera was based on Tieck's play and was first performed in Leipzig in 1850.

  • Le nid vert (The Green Nest), 1950
    By Georges Braque
    Located in Palo Alto, CA
The bird is Georges Braque's calling card. When the 70-year-old artist was commissioned to create monumental decorations for the Louvre, he chose the bird as his subject. This winged animal appears again and again in his oeuvre, but its representation is noteworthy in this print. To those who would say that Braque is not a draftsman, Dora Vallier writes, "for [him], drawing is not a means of giving outward appearance to forms but of showing what lies within." Along the same lines, Braque himself says, "Forget things, only remember their relationship." These two statements encourage thoughtful viewing. Coming back to its nest and hatched egg, a great black bird is hardly visible against the dark green of its home and the brown leaves behind. Rather than spend time on the details, Braque emphasizes the spatial arrangement of the scene. Everything is compressed down to one level; the curtain of heart-shaped leaves blends together as it falls toward the nest. Braque sees how the tree, nest and bird interrelate, and this entwined relationship is what he chooses to show. Created circa 1950, this original color etching is hand-signed by Georges Braque (Argentueil, Val-d'Oise, 1882 - Paris, 1963) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered 281/300 in pencil in the lower left margin. The edition was printed by Atelier Krommelinck, Paris on Rives paper, and published by Maeght, Paris. Catalogue Raisonné: Georges Braque The Green Nest (Le nid...

David Hockney A Moving Still Life, from The Blue Guitar, 1976-1977 is a playful scene that takes its title to the full extent of its literal meaning. The center of the composition is dominated by a mannequin-like head and a table with a typical still-life arrangement, set on the surface of a large table suggested by the shading and edge lines in the bottom right. The hair of the mannequin blows out behind it, threading neatly through a mysterious red hoop...
