About the Item

'Mad Dash' is a print that exemplifies the work of Joseph Rozman during the 1970s, moving beyond the playful pictographs of the previous decade and morphing into an increasingly surreal and psychedelic style. The print emphasizes negative space, filling the margins of the paper with black ink and leaving the central composition white. Within this white field is a figure in metamorphosis, teetering between plant, animal and man-made forms. The primary motif of the composition, however, is the cloud: a lobed cloud-form frames the central figure in a field of white, while smaller clouds dance in a line in the black margins. Like the central figure, clouds are in constant fluxus and never maintain the same shape for long. 10 x 8 inches, artwork 21.25 x 18.5 x 1.75 inches, frame Signed and dated in pencil, lower right Entitled "Mad Dash" in pencil, lower center Edition 9/12 in pencil, lower left Inscribed in pencil on reverse "Happy Birthday to David [Barnett] 2/22/73 J. Rozman 73 Your friend + 1st artist Best wishes" Framed to conservation standards using archival materials including 100 percent rag matting and Museum Glass to inhibit fading and reduce glare. Housed in a modern profile silver gilded frame. Artwork in excellent condition; some wear to frame. Joseph Rozman (b. 1944, Milwaukee, WI) received his BFA and MFA from UW-Milwaukee by 1969, and would later become a Professor at Mount Mary College. His style is a spontaneous merging of ancient art with Modernist concerns: like Paul Klee and Adolph Gottlieb, his compositions are dominated by pictographs and symbols, drawing influence from Ancient Egyptian styles and prehistoric rock art. His approach to painting likewise falls in the legacy of Abstract Expressionism, with his free experimentation with varied materials and processes, and his delight in color and texture. Caring the credo of "Art is Fun" Rozman's playful gestures recur in his richly diverse works.
