About the Item
This serigraph, an Artist's Proof (A/P), is a tribute to the French impressionist artist Degas. The female figure gazes at a painting that we assume is by Degas; the model for the nude is Maldonado's wife. Great attention is paid by the artist to all the elements of the figure. The paper used is a cotton and linen blend with a bronze tint for the drawing. The artist has written the title and placed his signature on the front. The piece is sold unframed.
Juan Maldonado produced more than 400 portraits on commission, and focused his work on portraiture. Influenced by the Renaissance masters, especially Leonardo Da Vinci, Maldonado was a pivotal part of the Nuyorican art movement in the 1970s. While he apprenticed in Europe, and studied at the University of Perugia, Italy, he developed his career in NYC where he mentored and taught young artists. Maldonado died in Puerto Rico in December 2016.
