About the Item
A group of young boys study the sacred scriptures with an elder in this serigraph print. A solemn and serious atmosphere pervades the four figures. The attention is centered on the text which is supposedly accurate in its rendering. The colors of the serigraph vary from brown to bronze and gold. There is a slight water stain on the left edge of the print that will be covered by a mat when framed. The artist has signed it in front; the print is sold unframed.
Juan Maldonado produced more than 400 portraits on commission, and focused his work on portraiture. Influenced by the Renaissance masters, especially Leonardo Da Vinci, Maldonado was a pivotal part of the Nuyorican art movement in the 1970s. While he apprenticed in Europe, and studied at the University of Perugia, Italy, he developed his career in NYC where he mentored and taught young artists. Maldonado died in Puerto Rico in December 2016.
