Judithe Hernández was recently featured in her first museum retrospective. "Beyond Myself, Somewhere, I Wait for My Arrival" at the Cheech Museum in Riverside California spans over 50 years of this groundbreaking artist’s career. It is the first major retrospective of her work, which centers the realities and mythologies of Mexican migrant women, exploring the legacies of colonization and the US Mexico border and their impact on women and children. Signed, numbered and titled in pencil from the edition of 74. Image of Eve with a luchadora mask and antlers, surrounded by goldfish, and a red hand outreached in her direction. Created at the historic Self Help Graphics in Los Angeles California. Judithe Hernández (born 1948 in Los Angeles) is a Chicana artist and a founding member of the Chicano Art movement and the Los Angeles Mural movement. She first received acclaim in the 1970s as a muralist. Hernández has lived both in Chicago, Illinois and Los Angeles. In 1974, she became the "fifth member", and the only woman, in Los Four, an influential East Los Angeles Chicano artist collective, along with Gilbert Luján, Carlos Almaraz, Frank E. Romero, and Roberto de la Rocha. In 2013, Hernández was one of 72 artists chosen for the first major exhibition of contemporary American artists of Latino descent at the Smithsonian American Art Museum from works in their permanent collection.In 2011, her contributions to art were honored in the Getty Foundation sponsored arts initiative, Pacific Standard Time: Los Angeles Art 1945-1980. Hernández’s was among a select group of artists whose work was exhibited in several different PST exhibitions. She was also featured in a public television documentary and an installation of Los Angeles murals at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. In 2012, she was one of the artists who helped inaugurate the new América Tropical Interpretive Center honoring the Mexican master David Alfaro Siqueiros and his mural masterpiece. She has recently been the recipient of the prestigious C.O.L.A. Fellowship (City of Los Angeles Individual Artist Fellowship) for 2013.
