About the Item

This exquisite lithograph after Jules Pascin (1885–1930), titled Portrait de Pierre Mac Orlan (Portrait of Pierre Mac Orlan), originates from the rare 1954 album Pascin, published by Editions du livre, Monte-Carlo, under the direction of Andre Sauret. Printed by the renowned atelier Mourlot Freres, Paris, on March 3, 1954, this edition exemplifies mid-century French printmaking at its finest. The work presents a sensitively rendered portrait of the French writer Pierre Mac Orlan, executed with Pascin's characteristic psychological insight and fluid modernist line. Executed on grand velin Renage paper, this lithograph measures 9.5 x 12.25 inches (24.1 x 31.1 cm). As issued, it is unsigned and unnumbered, reflecting its original publication format. The album was produced under the supervision of Andre Sauret—one of the most respected publishers in postwar Europe—and realized by Mourlot Freres, whose collaboration with masters such as Picasso, Chagall, and Matisse defined the golden era of 20th-century lithography. The color plates were executed in the workshops of Mourlot Freres, lithographes, in Paris. Typography of L'Imprimerie Union. The original etchings attached to the C head examples were printed on Roger Lacouriere's presses. The total edition was drawn in MM examples, decomposing as follows: C examples numbered from I to C with III original etchings, nineteen hundred numbered examples from CI to MM." About the Artist: Jules Pascin (1885–1930)—born Julius Mordecai Pincas in Bulgaria—was a key figure of the Ecole de Paris (School of Paris) and affectionately known as the Prince of Montparnasse. His artistic vision combined Post-Impressionist sensuality with a psychological depth that explored themes of femininity, intimacy, and emotional fragility. Educated in Vienna and Munich, Pascin spent significant time in the United States before settling in Paris, where he became a central figure among expatriate artists. His drawings and paintings, often depicting women in tender, contemplative states, are marked by fluid linework and a unique atmosphere of melancholy elegance. Today, Pascin's works are held in major international collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Centre Pompidou (Paris). His art remains celebrated for its emotional nuance and refined modernist sensibility. The highest auction price for a Pascin artwork is USD 367,007, achieved by Homme et femme / Les robes claires (circa 1911–12) at Christie's London in 2023.
