About the Item
Tokyo Lights is a limited edition cityscape print by Laura Jordan. The process in which Laura creates her work is that she produces lots of small illustrations which are then layered on top of each other to create a larger cityscape. The drawings are scanned and rescaled to create the print.
Laura Jordan is available online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Please call us if you cannot find the work you are looking for as we have all works available if needed. Laura Jordan artist and printmaker is often compared to some of the world’s greatest draughtmans, Laura Jordan’s ability to put pen to paper and map out complex, yet aesthetically beautiful and stimulating cityscapes, is pure creative genius. Her fascination with society, in particular the issue of class in poorer urban living environments, is the stimulus of her creativity that subsequently has led to the depiction of the world’s major cities. Nestled into the narrative of each piece Laura’s work features thought provoking social commentary in the form of stories; usually of events and policies within the city she is depicting. Laura Jordan’s journey began studying graphic design and editorial illustration at the London Collage of Communication (LCC) before selling limited edition prints on stalls at various markets around London, firstly Portobello, then Camden and Spitalfields. Four years later, and now exhibiting in over four continents, Laura has built up an international reputation with an expanding global audience and is continuing to expand her portfolio of world cities. Laura was born in 1984 and grew up in Haslemere Surrey.

Reasons to be Cheerful – Key
Reasons to be Cheerful is an episodic map of London ephemera, history, urban myths and legends. The focus is unapologetically cheerful and optimistic. Below is a key to the references, most of which are labelled. I have included an explanation where needed.

Ada Salter (social reformer and one of the first woman councillors in London. Honoured with a statue in Southwark Park)
Arnold Circus (bandstand in the middle of the circus at the heart of the Boundary Housing Estate in Bethnal Green)
Battersea dogs Home (I’ve used one of Ben Wilson’s gum paintings to depict this wonderful charity)
Battersea Power Station and pig (Pink Floyds inflatable pig floats above the Battersea Power Station for a photo shoot for the cover of their Animals album)
BBC
BFI (British Film Institute/ National Film Theatre)
Beigels (beigels from the famous Beigel Bake on Brick Lane)
Bibendum (former Michelin Tire Art Deco building converted to a complex of shops and restaurants. The Michelin man on the bike is from one of its stained glass windows)

Chelsea Physic Garden (statue of Sir Hans Sloan by Simon Smith)
Chewing Gum Artist (Ben Wilson paints pictures on discarded and trodden pieces of chewing gum. They can be found all over London and I have included multiple references to them on my map)
