Lexicon Love
"A Cowboy Needs A Horse" Framed Digital Collage

2023

About the Item

This piece titled "A Cowboy Needs A Horse" is an original artwork made from digital collage art by Lexicon Love. This piece is shipped in the pictured wood frame and measures 23”h x 17”w. "A Cowboy Needs A Horse" debuted during Paradigm Gallery's thirteenth anniversary exhibition, "Lucky 13", which featured works that use the themes are luck, tradition, and superstition. The work followed the artist's typical style of vintage collage. Ravens are omens of portent. For Good or Ill, In Sickness and in Health, On a Fateful Day. About Lexicon Love: Australian born and bred, I am a self-taught collage artist who works under the name Lexicon Love. I love collage art essentially because I enjoy the process. I am less preoccupied with the end result. I am drawn to the surreal and unsettling and try to inject that into my work where possible, always seeking out the unexpected connections between humour and tragedy. Ultimately it’s the way in which collage art challenges traditional notions of aesthetics, which I find most appealing. My aim is to transport the observer to a time and place of their own choosing. By hiding the faces I disrupt the observers gaze. I remove any distraction and invite the observer to slow down and join the dots in order to seek out the hidden. I guess the real power of the final composition is what can’t be seen. At this point the observer holds all the power and the artist none! Although my mental approach is analogue, my physical techniques are digital. The most significant challenge for me is giving each artwork the slight imperfections of hand and the general look and feel of being made entirely from traditional analogue practices. To achieve this, I do not use any sophisticated software such as Photoshop or Illustrator. Instead, my tools of choice are extremely basic and closely mimic analogue techniques. It’s like working with your hands in the traditional sense. My process begins by finding the trigger for each piece. This is usually a single image that really catches my eye, grabs me by the throat, and triggers the all-important starting point. Remixing the old with the new to create new truths, I organize and reorganize until it ‘feels right’. Although it’s a given that a cowboy needs a horse, he could also use a saddle, stirrups and reins. So – some Luck.

Parasite: “There’s a lot to unpack in Bong Joon Ho's PARASITE. It asks many questions and doesn’t give us comforting answers. For the poster, I wanted to capture that sense of discomfort and unease. A seemingly picture-perfect moment between the happily rich Parks completely oblivious to what’s unfolding around them, and the Kim family relegated to the shadows struggling with their own complex feelings toward such wealth and privilege. It’s a timely film, groundbreaking for a handful of reasons, and difficult to define. My hope is the poster art is just as mesmerizing and ambiguous as the film itself.” - Rory Kurtz...
