About the Item

Lithograph after Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps (1803–1860). This striking lithograph by Eugène Le Roux interprets a dramatic composition by Alexandre-Gabriel Decamps, one of the leading figures of French Romantic Orientalism. The scene depicts three witches in a dimly lit interior: one kneeling in shadow before a fire, while two others stand gesturing in invocation, their figures illuminated by the supernatural glow. Around them, symbolic elements heighten the mood—a black cat perches on a table, a broom lies discarded, and a skull peers from the shadows. Printed in 1846, the work belongs to the celebrated 19th-century tradition of reproductive lithography, which disseminated masterworks by painters such as Decamps to a wider public. Le Roux captures both the painterly chiaroscuro and the eerie atmosphere of Decamps’ imagination with remarkable fidelity. The sheet shows scattered foxing consistent with age, particularly in the margins, but the impression remains strong and atmospheric.
