About the Item

This exquisite heliogravure after Marc Chagall (1887–1985), titled Le Dauphin mort et les trois cent ecus (The Dead Dolphin and the Three Hundred Ecus), originates from the distinguished Daphnis et Chloe (Daphnis and Chloe) suite—one of the artist’s most romantic and visionary cycles. Published in 1977 by George Braziller, New York, and printed by Ernst Wartelsteiner, Munich, West Germany, this edition presents faithful renderings of the original color lithographs created by Chagall in 1961 for the landmark illustrated book Daphnis et Chloe. The composition depicts the discovery of the dead dolphin and the offering of three hundred écus, an episode rich with allegory and compassion. Chagall’s masterful use of blues and violets conveys a sense of melancholy and mystic beauty, reflecting both the tragedy and transcendence of nature. Executed on velin paper, this heliogravure measures 12.5 x 9.5 inches (31.75 x 24.13 cm). As issued, it is unsigned and unnumbered, consistent with the authorized 1977 publication format. This edition, produced under the supervision of Les Editions Verve, Paris, preserves the tonal harmony, poetic sensitivity, and mythological lyricism of the original lithographs created by Chagall for the 1961 deluxe edition of Daphnis et Chloe, one of the most celebrated illustrated books of the 20th century. Artwork Details: Artist: After Marc Chagall (1887–1985) Title: Le Dauphin mort et les trois cent ecus (The Dead Dolphin and the Three Hundred Ecus), from Daphnis et Chloe (Daphnis and Chloe), 1977 Medium: Heliogravure on velin paper Dimensions: Paper size 12.5 x 9.5 inches (31.75 x 24.13 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued Date: 1977 (after the 1961 lithographs) Publisher: George Braziller, Editeur, New York Printer: Ernst Wartelsteiner, Munich, West Germany Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the 1977 Daphnis et Chloe album © Les Editions Verve, Paris, 1961 Notes: Excerpted from the 1977 album (translated from French): "When it was suggested to Chagall that he illustrate the fable of Daphnis et Chloe, he began his preparation by making two trips to Greece. And it is the very essence of the Greek landscape that was absorbed by the artist and then recreated on pages drenched in blue, shimmering with the sunniest yellow, shadowed in palest mauve. Beginning with a pastoral story of young love, Chagall produced fifty-eight original color lithograph pages for a limited edition published in 1961 that has since become priceless. Now, for the first time, an adaptation of Chagall's magnificent illustrations to Daphnis et Chloe, printed in seven colors and integrated with the charming story, is being made available in an edition which will enable many more people to possess this masterpiece, to be enchanted by the artist's soaring color harmonies and the touching nakedness of bodies evoking the infinite softness of the air on the island of Lesbos. It has been said of Chagall that he uses only what he finds in a text; he neither adds nor subtracts. The magic in his work consists in his internalizing the story, subjecting it to that "alchemy" which makes each of his books a whole endowed with a life of its own. In Daphnis et Chloe a personal dream has been transformed into a universal Eden where the figures seem to float in an atmosphere of infinite happiness whose warmth is all-pervasive. Every effort has been made to reproduce this masterwork with exacting fidelity to the beauty of the original lithographs in Chagall's Daphnis et Chloe." About the Artist: Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Belarus-born French painter, printmaker, and designer whose visionary use of color and poetic symbolism made him one of the most beloved artists of the 20th century. Rooted in the rich imagery of his Jewish heritage and childhood in Vitebsk, his art intertwined folklore, faith, and romance with a dreamlike modern sensibility. Chagall’s distinctive style fused elements of Cubism, Fauvism, and Surrealism while remaining deeply personal and narrative, evoking emotion through floating figures, lovers, and village scenes. Over his long career, he created masterworks across painting, printmaking, stained glass, ceramics, stage design, and illustration, leaving an indelible mark on modern art. His works are featured in major museums worldwide, including MoMA, the Guggenheim, the Tate, and the Centre Pompidou. The highest price ever paid for a Chagall artwork is approximately $28.5 million USD at Sotheby’s in New York in 2017 for Les Amoureux (1928).
