About the Item

This exceptional lithograph after Marc Chagall (1887–1985), titled Versammlung der Götter (Assembly of the Gods), originates from the distinguished German edition of Homer’s Die Odyssee (The Odyssey). Published in 1989 by Daco-Verlag Günter Bläse, Stuttgart, and printed by Lichtdruck AG, Zürich, Dielsdorf, the work represents a refined second edition of Chagall’s original lithographs created for the 1974–75 French edition of L’Odyssée. This majestic composition portrays the divine council of the Olympian gods as they deliberate the fate of Odysseus, rendered in Chagall’s transcendent color palette and fluid dreamlike imagery that evokes both power and compassion. Printed on 250 g/m² Bütten Papierwerke Miliani AG, Fabriano paper, measuring 14.88 x 11.69 inches (37.8 x 29.7 cm), Versammlung der Götter (Assembly of the Gods) exemplifies Chagall’s mastery of mythological storytelling and his ability to elevate ancient themes into the spiritual realm of modern art. Produced with the authorization of Vava Chagall, this edition is a testament to the artist’s devotion to poetic symbolism and his luminous interpretation of Homer’s epic. Published by Daco-Verlag Günter Bläse, Stuttgart; printed by Lichtdruck AG, Zürich, Dielsdorf, September 1989. Excerpted from the folio (translated from German): The French edition L’Odyssée, with the original lithographs by Marc Chagall, was published in 1974/75 in a CCL-example edition by Fernand Mourlot, Paris. In 1989, with the authorization of Mrs. Vava Chagall, the German-language edition of The Odyssey in two volumes was published by Daco-Verlag Günter Bläse, Stuttgart. Volume I contains songs I–XII with 20 color lithographs (including 4 double-page spreads) and 19 gray lithographs. Volume II contains songs XIII–XXIV with 23 color lithographs (including 2 double-page spreads) and 20 gray lithographs. For the German text, the prose translation by Wolfgang Schadewaldt was chosen with the permission of Rowohlt Taschenbuch Verlag, Reinbek near Hamburg. Set design in Berthold Garamond Antiqua by F+M Bauer, Stuttgart. Printing production was carried out by Lichtdruck AG in Zürich/Dielsdorf. The color lithographs were reproduced in 8–12 colors using the raster-free Granolitho process. The 210 g Bütten paper was specially produced by Papierwerke Miliani AG in Fabriano, Italy. Bookbinding was executed by Atelier Stemmle AG, Zürich. Cover design by Stephan Götz. Publishing manager: Peter Steinbach. The circulation of the German-language edition was MMD examples, with some examples marked H.C. (hors commerce) reserved for the publisher and his staff. About the artist: Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Russian-French modernist painter whose visionary style blended Cubism, Fauvism, and Surrealism with deeply personal symbolism drawn from Jewish folklore, biblical themes, and village life. Born in Vitebsk, Belarus, and later active in Paris, Chagall developed a poetic visual language marked by floating figures, vibrant color, and dreamlike compositions that transcend time and place. His work reflects a synthesis of memory, spirituality, and emotion, positioning him as one of the most expressive and influential artists of the twentieth century. Chagall’s paintings, stained glass, and prints are housed in major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, and the Chagall Museum in Nice. Revered for his fusion of imagination and modernist innovation, his art continues to captivate collectors worldwide. The highest auction price for a Chagall artwork is USD 28,453,000, achieved by Les Amoureux (1928) at Sotheby’s New York in 2017.
