Scène IX, Shakespeare, Macbeth, Eaux-fortes de Gromaire

1958

About the Item

Etching on Vélin de Rives paper. Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued. Good condition. Notes: From the folio, Shakespeare, Macbeth, Eaux-fortes de Gromaire, 1958. Published by Tériade, éditeur, Paris; printed by L'Imprimerie nationale, Paris, September 30, 1958. Excerpted from the folio (translated from French), The present edition of Macbeth of Shakespeare according to the translation of François-Victor Hugo is illustrated with twenty original eaux-fortes engraved by Marcel Gromaire. The draw of these etchings was carried out by Raymond Haasen; the coppers were scratched after drawing. The text was composed in «Romain du Roi» body, twenty-four engraved by Grandjean au XVII Siècle sur l'ordre de Louis XIV. The compositions and impressions were executed under the direction of Georges Arnoult. The draw was completed on the presses of the L'Imprimerie nationale on the Thirtieth, September, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Fifty-Eight, Daniel Gibelin being director. It was drawn from this work CLXXX examples on Vélin de Rives, numbered from I to CLXXX, the first LX with a suite on Vergé de Montval, and XX examples, excluding trade, reserved for collaborators, numbered from I to XX. All [colophons] are signed by the artist. In addition, sixty albums were drawn with the continuation of the twenty etchings of the book—all the plates signed by the artist. MARCEL GROMAIRE (1892-1971) was a French painter. He painted many works on social subjects and is often associated with Social Realism, but Gromaire can be said to have created an independent oeuvre distinct from groups and movements. He was in the milieu of Picasso, Chagall, Miro, and Matisse.
