About the Item
The artist confessed that, regarding her working methodology, she performs exhaustive research before starting a series. This process includes developing the theme and selecting colors that contrast with each other, opting for opposite rather than related tones. For the images, her inspiration comes from various sources: photographs she takes herself, magazines, newspapers, and she considers the media fundamental to her work.
Colombian artist Maripaz Jaramillo makes sexuality the subject of her work. In the 1970’s, Jaramillo produced an entire series of the possibilities for women in society at the time; they could be brides, widows, nuns, or prostitutes. La Monja # 1 and Señora Macbed 5, are part of these historical works. Some of Jaramillo’s paintings of women and couples, with the use of intense colour, agitated brushstrokes, exaggerated and distorted facial features, recall the characterization of the earlier German Expressionists, but in a contemporary framework. Her figures are beautiful, yet grotesque; splendid, yet decaying. Jaramillo was born in Colombia in 1948. She later moved to Paris, where she studied at Hayter & Atelier. She has represented her country at numerous Biennales, including the San Juan Biennale, Puerto Rico (1979, 1983 and 1988); the Norway Biennale (1980 and 1982); the London Biennale (1981); the Paris Biennale (1985), and the Cuenca Biennale, Ecuador (1987). Jaramillo currently lives and works in Colombia.
