About the Item
ELEGY FOR MY SHTETL is an original hand drawn, limited edition lithograph by Marius Sznajderman (Born - Paris, France 1926-2018) printed using hand lithography techniques on archival Arches paper, 100% acid-free. Sznajderman created the lithograph ELEGY FOR MY SHTETL in 1988 and included a Yiddish poem written by his uncle, the well-known Yiddish journalist S. L. Shneiderman. This poem is about Kazimierz, a small Polish town and the home of the artist’s grandparents. It represents a foreboding of the Holocaust. ELEGY FOR MY SHTETL is expressed as a black line, figurative abstract on a background of light orange illustrating a view of Kazimierz interpreted from pre-World War I photographs.
Kazimierz is a historical district of Kraków and Kraków Old Town, Poland. From its inception in the 14th century to the early 19th century, Kazimierz was an independent city, a royal city of the Crown of the Polish Kingdom, located south of the Old Town of Kraków, separated from it by a branch of the Vistula river. For many centuries, Kazimierz was a place where ethnic Polish and Jewish cultures coexisted and intermingled. The northeastern part of the district was historically Jewish. In 1941, the Jews of Kraków were forcibly relocated by the German occupying forces into the Krakow ghetto just across the river in Podgórze, and most did not survive the war.
The family and friends of S.L. Shneiderman published ELEGY FOR MY SHTETL, in his honor as a distinguished Yiddish poet and journalist. S.L. Shneiderman wrote the poem Elegy for My Shtetl in 1938, in Paris.
"The poem was like a premonition of the imminent Nazi Holocaust that destroyed hundreds of shtetlech on the banks of the Vistula, including my hometown, Kazimierz, where Jewish life had flourished for many generations, and Yiddish was the spoken language," Mr. Shneiderman said.
