About the Item

ICARUS I is an original hand-drawn lithograph created in 1986 by the French American artist Marius Sznajderman, printed in neutral warm grays and intense black on archival Arches paper 100% acid free. ICARUS I is an expressionistic abstract male figure composition depicting the fall of Icarus; a well known tale from Greek mythology. Sznajderman uses printed collage effect cutout pieces and expressive brushwork with a strong black linear drawing to give a feeling of frantic movement as the falling male figure dramatically attempts to save himself. Icarus is the story of the boy who flew too close to the sun and is one which is still told today. The story of Icarus is often used as a warning that people should be aware of the dangers of overconfidence and recklessness. Print size : 21.5 x 29.5 in., full bleed image, unframed, excellent condition, hand signed in pencil by Marius Sznajderman, printer's proof aside from the edition of 150 Edition size - 150, plus proofs Year published - 1986 Printer - J K Fine Art Editions Co. In his 40 years as an artist, he has had numerous one-man shows in the U.S. and South America and his work is in the permanent collections of many important museums.

Citation - black, white, abstracted figurative, brushed ink on paper
By Andrew Lui
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Brushed ink in grey and black leads the eye up the picture plane in this 55-inch tall painting on paper. The intense movement suggestive of rearing horses in this painterly work is in keeping with Lui's theme of pilgrimage in which he explores the idea of "self-inflicted happiness" as a deliberate response to the melancholy and complexity of life. This painting is floated and framed. Framed Size: 60 × 35 inches Born in Guangzhou, China, Lui participated in the Chinese Cultural Revolution as a member of the Red Guard 1968-70 and then escaped to Hong Kong by swimming. Making his way to Toronto he studied at the Ontario College of Art and became a citizen in the late 1970s. He continued studies in the UK, and Italy where he was drawn to the dynamic Uccello's Battle of San Romano...

"Icarus Suspended" Abstract Mythical Figurative Mixed Media
By Michael Ayrton
Located in Detroit, MI
“Icarus Suspended” is an extraordinary painting of Ayrton's obsession with flight, myths, mirrors and mazes. This complex piece shows a figure in flight, frozen in action, either swooping down or, perhaps, falling to earth. Named after the Greek mythological figure, Icarus, who along with his father attempted to escape from Crete by means of wings that his father constructed from feathers and wax. Flying too close to the sun the wax melted and both fell to earth. The positioning of Ayrton's figure is reminiscent of "The Fall of Icarus" by Jacob Peter Gowy, Museo Nacional del Prado. This is part of a series of artworks on Icarus some sculptural and some three-dimensional paintings on canvas. Verso contains gallery label Matthiesen Gallery, 142 Bond St., London, England, with a signature and text in upper right corner: "To Morton Schotnick. Bought on the occasion of The Archives of American Arts Tour to London, England. October 10, 1961. Michael Ayrton...
