About the Item
The sixth in a series of worn out Chuck Taylor Basquiat Converse Trainers. This time with a pair of my Converse Basquiat sneakers. Titled ‘Life Imitates Art III’ these sneakers feature the classic Basquiat dinosaur wearing Basquiats signature crown on his head. I love these sneakers and they always bring a smile to my face when I wear them.
The Basquiat Converse Sneakers artwork , available from artist Martin Allen, stand as a vivid testament to the fusion of high art and everyday fashion, with Converse embodying the spirit of Jean-Michel Basquiat and marrying it with the iconic Converse sneaker design. The idea to paint his sneakers is an homage to tradition of many great artists including Van Gogh who all painted their footware. This canvas, being the sixth in a series of worn-out Chuck Taylor limited edition Converse sneakers, showcases not just a piece of art but a collector’s item that bridges the gap between art and real life – hence the title ‘Life Imitates Art’.
Martin Allen, the artist behind this remarkable creation, has masterfully captured the essence of his Converse trainers which embody an image drawn from Basquiat’s work, which is known for its raw intensity, bold coloration, and fragmented figures. The original oil on canvas painting, sized at 24″ x 36″ (61cm x 91cm), brings the ordinary Converse sneakers into a new realm, making them art as well as everyday footwear. This initiative not only pays homage to Basquiat’s legacy but also introduces Martins work to a broader audience through the universal everyday medium of sneakers.
The original artwork is available sized at 24" x 36" DM if interested. The limited edition prints are sized at c. 16″ x 23″ (42cm x 59cm), are produced on Somerset Velvet acid-free paper with Archival Inks to ensure longevity and from an edition of only 100. Each print is uniquely hand-embellished by Martin Allen with silver leaf on the crowns, adding a personalized touch that makes each piece truly ‘one-of-a-kind’. The limited edition prints are signed and numbered by the artist, and each is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
The sneakers themselves (which Martin owns), feature the classic Basquiat dinosaur adorned with Basquiat’s signature crown, a motif that recurrently appears in Basquiat’s work as a symbol of majesty, power, and sovereignty. This choice of imagery not only reflects Basquiat’s iconic style but also evokes a sense of rebellion and a challenge to societal norms, much like Basquiat’s own life and career.
Martin Allen’s dedication to merging art with everyday objects transforms the way we perceive and engage with art. It’s not just about viewing art in galleries or museums; it’s about making art a part of our daily lives, wearable, and thereby, more intimate. The Basquiat Converse Sneakers serve as a canvas for expression, a conversation starter, and a means of carrying the legacy of a groundbreaking artist into the future.
Life Imitates Art III, priced at £180.00 for a limited edition print reflects not just the monetary value but the artistic and cultural significance it carries. Whether for fashion enthusiasts looking to make a bold statement, art collectors seeking to diversify their collection with something unique, or just admirers of Martin’s homage to Basquiat’s work, this sneaker artwork represents a merging of worlds that resonate on multiple levels.
As we consider the broader implications of such work, it’s clear that Martin’s work is more than just an artistic endeavor; it’s a movement towards democratizing art, making it accessible, and part of a global dialogue. The Basquiat Converse Sneakers art, through their artistic merit and cultural significance, embody a celebration of creativity, individuality, and the enduring impact of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s work in a contemporary context.
Through Martin Allen’s vision, art enthusiasts are offered a unique opportunity to engage with Basquiat’s legacy depicted on a Converse sneaker in a manner that is both personal and profound, creating a dialogue between everyday objects, pop-art and fashion.
