The limited edition Peter Getting Out of Nick's Pool by Nick Smith was created from the original collage presented in the 2022 Posed exhibition at Rhodes Contemporary Art Gallery in London. This exhibition explored the concept of pose in art and visual culture, reinterpreting iconic representations of the human figure through Smith's distinctive approach to color patterns and language. In Posed, Smith investigated how posture and the composition of an image can alter its meaning, paying tribute to significant figures in both classical and contemporary art. Within this theme, Peter Getting Out of Nick's Pool stands out as a reinterpretation of the iconic Peter Getting Out of Nick's Pool (1966) painting by David Hockney, one of the most recognizable images of British Pop figurative art. Through his distinctive collage technique using color fragments, Smith breaks down the image into components that, when viewed up close, contain words associated with each color, adding a conceptual layer that reinforces the dialogue between the image and its meaning. The technical features of this limited edition include gicleé with screenprinted varnish on 310 gsm Canson Rag Photographique paper. ABOUT THE ARTIST Nick Smith is a contemporary artist whose work blurs the boundaries between fine art and popular culture. A pivotal moment in his career came in 2011 when he recreated Warhol’s Marilyn using only color swatches. This marked the birth of his signature style—an innovative technique that merges visual deconstruction with textual elements. Language plays a crucial role in his works. Each Pantone-like color swatch is accompanied by a word, forming fragmented texts that add depth to the image. Sometimes poetic, sometimes ironic, these words encourage viewers to look beyond the surface and decipher the hidden narrative within the composition. Placed beneath or between the swatches, the text interrupts the white space, making language an integral part of the visual experience. Throughout his career, Smith has exhibited his work in renowned galleries and international art fairs. His first major solo exhibition, Psycolourgy (2015), presented at the Lawrence Alkin Gallery in London, marked a turning point in his career. In this series, he explored the psychology of color and its influence on emotional perception. Since then, he has exhibited at galleries such as Nelly Duff and Rhodes Contemporary Art, solidifying his presence in the art market. Smith’s works also play with scale and perception.
