Nura UlreichArt Deco - Surreal Baby Among the Stars in a Theater1928
1928
About the Item
In most of Nora's work, she combines realism and fantasy. Here, the viewer's position is the back of a theater. In front, there are four raised hands, cheering a monumental image of a sleeping wrapped infant resting on a crescent moon and surrounded by two stars. The infant is floating above the seats and centered in the middle theater curtain that has opened to a celestial sky. The image is quite stunning and may be influenced by Surrealist trends of the unconscious mind that were taking place in Europe. In the early '20s, she lived in Paris and was included in the prestigious Salon d’Automne.
This work was done in 1928 when where was back in New York and reflects the trends of Art Deco and Surrealism that she was exposed to. Nora Woodson Ulreich was a professional Nura, an American artist, muralist, children's book author, and illustrator who embraced of modernist trends. She was a multidisciplinary artist who specialized in lithography. Ulreich's work is included in the permanent collections of the San Diego Museum of Art, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. The Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Walker Art Center, and The David Winton Bell Gallery at Brown University. The work is framed under glass and pencil, signed and dated lower right. We can not find another print like this, and this may be a monotype or a unique print since it does not have an edition indicated. Framed dimensions: 17.5 x 14.5

Nura Ulreich
Nora Woodson Ulreich was born in 1899 in Kansas City, Missouri, and was known professionally as “Nura.” She was a painter, printmaker, author, and illustrator, particularly of children’s books. Ulreich studied at the Kansas City Art Institute, the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, and the Art Students League in New York. She also studied in Paris where she met her Hungarian-born husband, fellow artist Eduard Buk Ulreich, and first exhibited at the Théâtre des Champs Elysées in 1926. Her style was a studied but naïve form of modernism and she often portrayed seemingly innocent views of children and their pets. Nura was a strong believer in Christian Science and sometimes included spiritual motifs in her whimsical pieces with an Art Deco-inspired palette. Nura frequently collaborated with Edward and their combined works often use the moniker “Bukannura.” In 1927, their work was exhibited at the Dudensing Gallery on 57th Street in New York. Eduard was also a muralist who completed commissions for the Treasury Department’s Section of Fine Arts between 1937 and 1940. Both Nura and Eduard are listed in Who Was Who in American Art and all other standard references.

Midnight Madness - Witches on Night Flight
Located in Miami, FL
Pioneering female illustrator Gwenda Morgan creates an exuberantly complex image of a squad of broom-riding - pointed-hatted witches with black cats in tow. They fly through an inky black moonlit sky and are witnessed by only a rooftop owl. With the simple means of black and white, Morgan has rendered a highly charged composition that pluses with electricity. The whole image is on the cusp of being abstract while being representational. It is brilliantly designed with great attention to detail and is evocative of a sorcerer's malignant powers. Unframed. not signed
