ODELON REDON (French 1840 - 1916) JE SUIS TOUJOURS LA GRAND ISIS - I AM STILL THE GREAT ISIS NOBODY HAS PICKED UP MY VAIL, MY OFFSPRING IS THE SUN, 1896 (M 149) Lithograph on 'chine applique'. Unsigned as issued, Image 11 1/8 x 8 1/16 inches. Sheet 16 5/8 X 12 13/16 inches. On arches paper without watermark. Plate XVI from La Tentation de Saint-Antoine, 3rd Series Illustrations of the work by Gustave Flaubert. Plate XVI is between. pages. 146 and 147, (Editions Ambroise Vollard, 1938). Printed by August Clot, edition 220. One of an album of 24 plates. Full title. "Je suis toujours la grande Isis! Nul n'a encore souleve mon voile! Mon fruit est le soleil! .... I am still the great Isis! Nobody has ever yet lifted my veil!. My offspring is the sun. Very good condition full sheet. Some tape stain along part of the upper & lower margin verso. A little line of discoloration along the tip of the extreme sheet edge on 2 sides. The Image shows a nude female, her face in shadow, standing and holding an infant. A monkey appears at the the lower right. Commentary below from The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, Here light is a source of power and vitality. Isis, the Egyptian goddess of motherhood and fertility is depicted holding her son, Horus. A creature is crouching in the lower right corner. According to the text, this is Cynocephalos, the dog-headed baboon from Egyptian mythology. Flaubert uses it to symbolise death, and its black colour enhances this, together with its association with the jackal-headed god, Anubis. In Flaubert's text Isis is shrouded in a long, black veil, but in Redon's interpretation she seems to be engulfed by a mysterious black cloud or smoke, which obliterates her face and contrasts with the piercing white light on the left. Redon has signed the print in graphite in this area of light. Each of the prints displayed here from the third album is signed in graphite. Redon may have done this to give a sense of uniqueness and originality as he developed the credibility of the fine art print. This print was exhibited on its own in the Salon des Cents, organised by the avant-garde journal La Plume in April 1896.
