About the Item

Pablo Picasso — L'Atelier du vieux peintre Technique: Original color lithograph on paper, printed in five colors Date: 1954 Publisher/Printer: Mourlot, Paris Unnumbered and unsigned proof, outside the signed edition of 50. A rare and sought-after example of Picasso’s limited color lithographs, seldom seen on the market. Paper dimensions: 37.5 × 56.5 cm Condition: Excellent — pristine and well-preserved. Provenance: Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from a gallery in Cannes, dated December 2023. References: Bloch 760; Mourlot 260 -- In L’Atelier du vieux peintre, Pablo Picasso opens a whimsical window into the intimate world of the artist’s studio, a recurring subject throughout his prolific career. Executed in 1954 at the famed Mourlot workshop in Paris, this lithograph is a vibrant, lyrical work that blurs the boundary between the theatrical and the everyday. The scene is playfully staged: an aged artist sits before an easel, brush in hand, surrounded by a cast of characters—a nude model adjusting her hair, a childlike figure with crossed arms, a harlequin-like man in elaborate costume, and a seated, cloaked elderly woman. The composition combines Picasso’s mature line-work with a delightfully naïve energy, achieved through a balance of spontaneity and calculated abstraction. Despite the simplicity of line, each figure carries a strong emotional resonance—at once humorous and mysterious. Rendered in only five colors, the lithograph is an exquisite example of Picasso’s inventive use of color through lithographic means. On the right margin, the artist has included a set of vertical Roman numerals—X, III, II, V—and corresponding color swatches. These are not merely decorative, but rather serve as a visual legend: Picasso’s idiosyncratic, artistic method of indicating the palette used in the print. This choice elevates the print beyond representation, introducing a self-referential commentary on the act of printmaking itself—inviting the viewer to become aware of the process, not just the product. This particular impression is an unsigned, unnumbered proof aside from the limited signed edition of 50, making it a rare and desirable example of Picasso’s lithographic oeuvre. Few of his color lithographs are available on the market, and this one, in pristine condition, is especially notable for its clarity and freshness. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from a gallery in Cannes (dated December 2023), the work offers both historical importance and aesthetic delight. It embodies Picasso’s playfulness, his deep love of theater and spectacle, and his lifelong fascination with the creative process.
