About the Item
Born in Paris, France in 1883, Paul Rollon "Pola" Gauguin was the youngest of artist Paul Gauguin's (1848-1903) five legitimate children. Gauguin studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1905, and from 1906 to 1909 was an assistant to architects Hermann Baagøe Storck and Anton Rosen. He debuted as an artist at Blomqvist Kunsthandal and Kunstnerforbundet in Oslo in 1913, and exhibited in the Oslo Autumn Exhibition in 1914.
Gauguin started his own artist school in Oslo which he ran until 1924. He also worked as an author and critic for Dagbladet, Tidens Tegn, Verdens Gang and Ekstrabladet. Among his books are biographies of Henrik Lund, Christian Krohg, Edvard Munch and Ludvig Karsten. He also wrote the book "My Father, Paul Gauguin."
Gauguin's works are held in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Norway, National Gallery of Denmark, Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum in Norway, Stenersen Museum in Oslo, Harvard Art Museums and at the Portland Museum of Art in Oregon.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1921, artist Norman Rubington studied at the Yale School of Fine Arts and Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he participated in a number of group exhibitions and his first solo show at the Salon d'Automne in 1948, which received high acclaim. Following his studies, he returned to the States and exhibited in a series of shows in Boston, New York and San Francisco.
Rubington was awarded a grant from the Tiffany Foundation, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Prix de Rome prize and was a fellow of the McDowell Art Colony in New Hampshire.
