Excerpted from the Peter Max Archives, The 'Umbrella Man' is one of Peter Max's most famous signature characters emerging in the early years of his Neo-Fauve color studies of the 1980s. Max's 'Umbrella Man' is a sort of Felliniesque figure - with coat, hat and umbrella rendered in fluid brushwork and striking crimson and sapphire as he looks into a dazzling, golden horizon ahead. Max has created the piece with kinetic, expressionistic brushwork in the most astounding colors of nature. The artwork is gorgeously reproduced showing the detail of each stroke. It's an exuberant and contemplative work with an elegant Max line drawing printed in the margin.
