About the Item
This artwork titled 'Winter Tracery (Milford Connecticut)" is an original drypoint etching by noted American artist Philip Kappel, 1901-1981. It is hand signed and titled in pencil by the artist. The plate mark (Image) size is 9 x 12 inches, framed size is 17.25 x 21.25 inches. Custom framed in a wooden light grey frame, with light grey matting and black color fillet. It is in excellent condition.
About the artist:
Philip Kappel — painter, illustrator, printer, writer, and lecturer — was born on February 10, 1901 in Hartford, CT and died in 1981. Kappel is best remembered for his landscapes, portraits, figures, marine, lithography, and etching. He held a teaching position with H. B. Snell, Boothbay, ME Studios, 1923 and 1924. His addresses in 1929 were 500 Fifth Avenue in New York City and, for the summer, care of Philip Little, 10 Chestnut Street, Salem, MA; and in 1935, Sarasota, FL.
Kappel was a pupil of the Pratt Institute Art School in Brooklyn, NY and Philip Little (1857-1942) and held memberships with the North Shore Artists Association in Gloucester, MA; the Marblehead Art Association in Marblehead, MA; the Chicago Society of Etchers; the MacDowell Club in New York City; the Society of American Etchers in Brooklyn, NY; the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts in Hartford, CT; the American Federation of Arts; the Salmagundi Club in New York City; the Philadelphia Society of Etchers; the Washington Watercolor Club; the Cleveland Printmakers; and the Author's Club of New York City.
Kappel illustrated The Last Cruise of the Shanghai (1925); The Story of Man's Work; Lord Timothy Dexter (1925); Yankee Ballards (1930); American Etchers Series, vol. 4 (1929); and is represented in Fine Prints of the Year (1926 and 1927). Exhibitions and awards include a first prize at the Marblehead Art Association in 1925 and a prize in 1926; the Bijur Prize at the Brooklyn Society if Etchers, Brooklyn Museum in 1926; a prize at the Palm Beach Art Association in 1935; a prize at the Brooklyn Society of Etchers in 1926; the National Academy of Design from 1928 to 1946; the 1939 World's Fair in New York; the New Haven Paint and Clay Club in CT; the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art; the Kent Art Association; and the Meriden Arts and Crafts Society.

About the artist:
A native of Syracuse, John E. De Tore was born in 1902.
DeTore enjoyed painting continuously since the age of 8. Although he became an engineer with the Niagara Mohawk Power corporation he carried on elective training in the required branches of art.
He took seriously to the watercolor medium from 1940 and by 1955 he was well known for his decisively composed watercolor landscapes and their rich, deep chromatics - earning him acknowledgment in the American Artist Magazine November 1961 issue.

About the artist:
Carlo Wahlbeck was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1933. His studies from early youth included travel and visits to major museums in Europe. During a visit to the United States, Carlo was introduced to the Native American Indian and the rich history of the American West. He moved to Southern California in 1960 and still calls it home today.
Between 1960 and today, Carlo has traveled throughout the Southwestern United States and Mexico. For many years, he lived among the Navajo and Zunis, painting a great many surreal works that embodied their legends and outlook. He also spent 2 years in Mexico living among the Huichol people in the inaccessible mountains north of Tepic, painting the Indian religion and the white man's religion as seen through Huichol eyes.
Between 1979 and today, he mastered the technique and came to control it, producing a fabulous new medium base for his expressions. The evolvement of his art has show much diversification and his works can be found in prominent private and corporate collections, as well as museums both here in the United States and abroad.
