Phillip Andreas Killian
S. Iosephus - Original Etching by P.A. Killian - 1736

1736

About the Item

S. Iosephus is a black and white etching of technical virtuosity realized by the German artist, Philipp Andreas Kilian, in 1736. This is a really Baroc representation of Saint Joseph, the father of Jesus, recognizable by the tools of the trade well highlighted on the wooden table under construction. A marvelous man, portrayed in a moment of maximum muscular tension (he is making a table), has something in himself very closed to the sanctity. In fact an aura is appearing near the head and two angels have just appeared to assist during his enterprise. Original Title: S. Iosephus Iesu Nutritius This original print is in good condition, except for some minor yellowing on the lower margin and some light decoloration of blacks. Cream colored cardboard passepartout, cm 35 x 25, included. Philipp Andreas Kilian (Augusta, 1714-1745) Philipp Andreas Kilian was born in 1714 in Augsburg, from Georg Kilian and Juliane Maria, daughter of the deacon of Augusta Göbel. After an apprenticeship with his father, he attended the studio of Jacob Andreas Friedrich in Augusta and Georg Martin Preißler in Nuremberg. Among his most famous artworks today we remember those made in Dresden. In 1744 Kilian was appointed copper engraver at the court of Saxony. He became very popular mainly thanks to his illustration of the Bible and his book of drawings. In the first marriage Philipp Andreas Kilian married Susanna Sybilla Engelbrecht, daughter of Augsburg art director Martin Engelbrecht. Their son Georg Martin (1739-1760) was also a copper engraver in Augsburg. Kilian died in 1759 in his hometown, Augusta.
