About the Item

"Pierre Alechinsky (Belgium, 1927) 'Derriere le Miroir, Maeght Editeur', lithograph on paper 34.7 x 23.7 in. (88 x 60 cm.) Unframed Ref: ALE100-201 Pierre Alechinsky Born in the immediate post-war period, he studied typography and illustration at the National School of Architecture and Decorative Arts in La Cambre (Brussels). In 1945, he discovered the work of Michaux, Dubuffet and the surrealists and became friends with the art critic Jacques Putman. His first solo exhibition was held in 1947. Around this time he met Dotremont and that same year he joined the CoBrA group (Copenhagen, Brussels, Amsterdam), made up of artists such as Asger Jorn, Karel Appel, Hugo Claus, Lucebert, Pol Bury, and Constant Nieuwenhuys. Here he became one of its most productive members until the group's dissolution in 1951, a period in which he experimented against geometric abstraction, which was rigid and very fashionable at the time, opting for a more lyrical and spontaneous path of abstraction. It was after the group's dissolution that he began to work with new engraving techniques, specifically at the well-known Atelier 17, directed by Stanley William Hayter. Here he came into contact with artists such as Giacometti, Bram van Velde and Victor Brauner. In 1954 he held his first solo exhibition at the Galerie Nina Dausset (Paris) and met the Chinese painter Walasse Ting, who would play an important role in the development of his work. During these years he became interested in Chinese calligraphy and in bridging the gap between Eastern and Western art. In 1961 he travelled to the United States and began a constant exhibition activity at the Lefebre galleries (New York) and France (Paris). At this time he created “ Central Park ”, where he introduced “marginal observations” into his work for the first time, something that would be repeated throughout his artistic career. This particular work was chosen by André Breton for the international exhibition of the surrealist movement, specifically in its last edition. In this type of work, Alechinsky simulates interlacing curves, figures and non-figures in central planes, which are frequently outlined by a frame decorated with small squares filled with narrative or rhythmic motifs drawn with Indian ink. In 1969, his first retrospective was held at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, and was also shown at the Kunstverein in Düsseldorf and the Kunsthalle in Bremen. His first exhibition at the Centre Georges Pompidou was entitled “ Alechinsky in print ”. The artist produced a large number of lithographs and engravings, work which, together with his passion for books, led him to illustrate poems and texts (Cioran, Butor, Yves Bonnefoy, André Frénaud, Tardieu...) and to publish many books. In addition to being an artist, Alechinsky taught painting at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1983-1987). During this period he received the Grand Prix National des Arts et des Lettres in Paris, and produced his series of drawings “ Flora Danica ”, which reflects his last experience in China (1988). In 1994 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Free University of Brussels, and in 2006 he was named a Knight of the French Legion of Honour. Today his work is distributed among the most important private collections in the world."
