1904-1905

About the Item

RENOIR, PIERRE AUGUSTE (1841 -1919) "Femme au cep de vigne, 4th variante" Woman by the Grape Vine, 4th variant Delteil 48, Stella 48 Original lithograph in black ink, 1904 -1905 Only State. From the edition of 950 on vellum paper. Signed in the stone lower left 5 ¼” x 4” Fine strong impression with rich tone Printed at the studio of Clot, Paris c.1905. First offered for sale by Vollard in 1919 in the series: Douze Lithographies Originales (referred as the Vollard Suite). The lithographs in this series were drawn on stone by Renoir in 1904 –1905, and the editions were printed at this time. However, none of the prints were issued by Vollard until 1919. The stones were cancelled after the edition. Vollard tells an amusing story about Renoir and the lithographs in this series. Renoir was apparently very busy and Vollard was so anxious to get him to complete the prints that he used to actually follow Renoir around the town carrying a heavy litho stone ready for him to work on.By the first decade of this century Renoir was increasingly using the theme of the nude as a vehicle for the description of light and shade rather than as a linear or sculptural form. Thus his handling, in his brush drawings in particular, became loose and free so that the form of the figure blends and merges with the background shadows.A Partial Listing of Public Collections: Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris; Art Institute of Chicago; Brooklyn Museum; Boston Public Library; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Grunwald; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Museum of Modern Art, New York; New York Public Library; National Gallery of Art, Washington DC; Philadelphia Museum of Art.

  • "La Vache Enragee" iconic vintage poster by Toulouse-Lautrec
    By Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
    Located in Hinsdale, IL
TOULOUSE-LAUTREC, HENRI DE (1864-1901) "LA VACHE ENRAGÉE" Wittrock P27B, Adhemar 197 Original color lithograph Wittrock’s State III of III with letters Printed on buff wove paper, c. 1896 Bears artist stamp “TL” upper right, dated 96 Image size: 22 1/2” x 23 5/8” Several examples are known where Lautrec drew on work by other artists whom he admired. In this poster there are clear references to Adolphe Willette's humorous themes and rococo style of illustration. Willette was the founder and illustrator of the short-lived monthly “La Vache Enragee”(the angry cow) edited by the cartoonist Adolphe Roedel. This colored poster of the same title was commissioned for the appearance of the magazine March 1896. As a reference to the wretched financial state of most artists, the term “manger de la vache enrage” (meaning roughly, “meaning not having enough to eat”) was adopted as the motto for the “Vachalcade”which was held on Montmarte annually from 1896. This was an artists' procession, with fanfares and allegories on fame and the muses; it also included a furious cow and a troupe of pretty girls as a satire on Europa with the bull. The event was organized by Roedel"(Adriani p.217) Toulouse-Lautrec took up lithography at a high point in its history, when technical advances in color printing and new possibilities for large scale led to a proliferation of posters as well as prints for the new bourgeois collector. In his short career, he created more than three hundred fifty prints and thirty posters, as well as lithographed theater programs...

The Gazette des Beaux-Arts was a French art review, found in 1859 by Édouard Houssaye, with Charles Blanc as its first chief editor. Assia Visson Rubinstein was chief editor under the direction of George Wildenstein from 1928 until 1960. Her papers, which include all editions of the Gazette from this period, are intact at the Cantonal and University Library of Lausanne in Dorigny. The Gazette was a world reference work on art history for nearly 100 years - one other editor in chief, from 1955 to 1987, was Jean Adhémar. It was bought in 1928 by the Wildenstein family, whose last representative was Daniel Wildenstein, its director from 1963 until his death in 2001. The review closed in 2002. Biography: Henri Fantin-Latour, in full Ignace-Henri-Jean-Théodore Fantin-Latour (born Jan. 14, 1836, Grenoble, France—died Aug. 25, 1904, Buré), French painter, printmaker, and illustrator noted for his still lifes with flowers and his portraits, especially group compositions, of contemporary French celebrities in the arts. Fantin-Latour’s first teacher was his father, a well-known portrait painter. Later, he studied at the school of Lecoq de Boisbaudran and attended the École des Beaux-Arts. He exhibited at the official French Salons, but in 1863 he also showed his work in the rebel Salon des Refusés. Although academic in manner, Fantin-Latour was independent in style. He had numerous friends among the leading French painters of his day, including J.-A.-D. Ingres, Eugène Delacroix, Camille Corot, Édouard Manet, and Gustave Courbet. His portrait groups, often arranged in rows of heads and figures like 17th-century Dutch guild portraits...
