The beautiful lady in Raf Urban's artwork "France" depicts Loletha Elayne Falana, famously known as actress, singer, dancer, and model Lola Falana. She was born in 1942 and began acting at the age of five. Later, she studied jazz, ballet, tap, and modern dance while in high school. In the early 1960’s, while dancing in a chorus line in Atlantic City, Falana was discovered by Sammy Davis Jr. and became his protégé.
Raf Urban is a French street artist born in 1971. He grew up in a Paris suburb under the influence of the emerging street art culture of the early 1980s. He is particularly fascinated by the stencil technique for its effectiveness, its diverse possibilities, and its combative and poetic side. This tool has become his preferred form of expression, which he has since brought to his walls. With his stencils, which create colorful faces, he aims to convey a message of diversity, hope, and tolerance to as many people as possible, but also to question our ability to reach out to others and live in harmony.
The main motifs of his works are women, who represent a great source of inspiration for the artist – from soul singer Amy Winehouse to Pakistani women's rights activist Malala Yousufzai to Angela Davis, a member of the Black Panthers and a civil rights activist in the USA.
His works can be found on the walls of many cities, including Paris, Turin, Rome, Barcelona, London, New York, Toronto and Montreal, and some works can also be found in galleries.
