About the Item

Palamonis et Pachomii is a beautiful hand-watercolor etching realized by the Flemish artist Raphael Sadeler (Anvers, Antwerpen 1560 - Munich between 1628 and 1632), after a drawing by Maarten de Vos (Anvers, Antwerpen, 1532 - Anvers 1603). Inscriptions on the lower margin in the matrix area, not completely readable: "Raph sadeler sculp. (..) / M.de Vos sigue" Caption on plate in Latin: "Life PALAMONIS fuit hec iuueniq. PACHOMII, Ducere row, preces fundere, dura pati. O par empyreo dignum: whose sole voluptas, Posse voluptas spernere, posse pati." Original etching from coeval copper plate from the SOLITUDO SIVE VITAE PATRUM EREMICOLARUM For antiquissimum Patrem D. Hieronimum eorundem primarium olim conscripta: iam true primum aeneis laminis idà ioannis et Raphael Sadeler frairù imprensis scampt: et excusa. The engraving, dating around 1580, represents the Palestinian hermit Palamone reading the Holy Scriptures. This old master original plate presents contemporary watercolor (late twentieth century) and is in good condition, except for the usual yellowing of the paper and a small tear-out edge, some small fold of the paper visible at the lower edge and blooms.
