STREET SCENE, NYC Crowd, is an original, hand drawn lithograph by Raphael Soyer, the renowned Russian-born American realist painter, draftsman, and printmaker. Printed using traditional lithography printmaking techniques on archival Arches paper 100% acid free paper, signed and numbered in pencil. A sensitive realistic NY city street scene of a group of young people, one woman wearing a cardigan sweater, print dress, and shoulder bag, two women wear A-line skirts, one casually looks sideways toward the viewer. Soyer's drawing style possesses a dynamic graphite pencil quality and quiet intimacy. Raphael Soyer is best known for picturing poverty stricken victims of the Great Depression in New York City, also for creating images of everyday urban life and of the nude female body. Print size - 29.5 x 21.5 inches, unframed, excellent condition, hand signed in pencil by Raphael Soyer Edition size - 300, plus profs Year published - 1979 Printer - J K Fine Art Editions Co., NY Raphael Soyer, painter, lithographer, and teacher, was born on December 15, 1899, in Borisoglebsk, Tombov, Russia and is best known for his compassionate, naturalistic depictions of urban subjects. He was a member of the National Academy of Design, American Academy of Arts and Letters, American Society of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, Artists Congress, and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Soyer taught at the Art Students League in New York. Working in oil or lithography, he was an American Scene artist who championed realism and his work portrays the daily life of New Yorkers. Historically, Soyer is associated with the social realist artists of the 1930s, whose art championed the cause of social justice.

Moses Soyer (December 25, 1899 – September 3, 1974) was an American social realist painter. Soyer was born in Borisoglebsk, Russian Empire, in 1899. His father was a Hebrew scholar, writer and teacher. His family emigrated to the United States in 1912. Two of Soyer's brothers, Raphael (his identical twin) and Isaac were also painters. Soyer's wife, Ida, was a dancer, and dancers are a recurring subject in his paintings. Soyer studied art in New York, first at Cooper Union and later at the Ferrer Art School, where he studied under the Ashcan painters Robert Henri and George Bellows. He had his first solo exhibition in 1926 and began teaching art the following year at the Contemporary Art School and The New School. He died in the Chelsea Hotel in New York while painting dancer and choreographer Phoebe Neville. He was included in the show “American Modernism – Paintings from the Dr. and Mrs. Mark S. Kauffman Collection,” along with 30 leading masters of American modernism, which captured the essence of a revolutionary era...
