About the Item

"Kina Lillet" original 1937 lithograph poster by artist Robys. Affiches Stentor Etab. Marboeuf 91 Rue Reaumur Paris printed on front lower left. Robys 37 on right side. This exuberant poster celebrates the eponymous aperitif, Kina Lillet, a French aromatized wine that was developed in 1887. The beverage was flavored with quinine made from the bark of the kina-kina tree, and was a popular beverage in the 1920s and beyond. It is notably featured in Ian Fleming's 1953 novel, "Casino Royale," as part of a drink concocted by James Bond. The bottom text reads: "au vin blanc de la Gironde" or "with white wine from Gironde," an area of France world-renowned for its architecture and vineyards. Its capital is Bordeaux. The artist, Robert Wolff, more commonly known as Robys, was born around 1916. Though little is known about his life, his work is documented between the years of 1933 and 1950.
