About the Item
Original etching by Salvator Rosa (Naples 1615 - Rome 1673), from the celebrated Figurine series, depicting a soldier holding a shield adorned with the head of Medusa. Dated to the artist's Florentine years (ca. 1656-1657), the plate bears the monogram "S.R." and corresponds to the second and final state (Bartsch 63; Bozzolato 43; Rotili 65; Wallace 62; Theodoli 62/II).
The Figurine series, comprising more than sixty subjects, was conceived as a repertoire of graphic inventions portraying warriors, philosophers, and hermits, much admired by 17th-century collectors who often gathered them in albums. In Florence, the artist was surrounded by a circle of intellectuals and collectors who appreciated prints of a fantastic and philosophical character; it was in this context that Rosa developed this series of incisive and imaginative images.
The sheet measures about 14.5 × 9.5 cm and is printed on early laid paper, with chainlines spaced about 32-34 mm apart. This measurement is typical of Italian paper mills of the 17th century and differs from French and Flemish papers of the same period, which generally show narrower spacing (25-28 mm). The structure of the paper, combined with the freshness of the impression and the sharpness of the line, confirms that this is a 17th-century printing, or at the latest from the early 18th century, rather than a later reprint.
The plate was never altered after the addition of the Medusa's head on the shield: all known impressions therefore belong to the second state.
Comparable impressions are preserved in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York), the British Museum (London), the Norton Simon Museum (Pasadena), the National Gallery of Art (Washington), the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Harvard Art Museums (Cambridge).
Condition: complete sheet, paper with natural old patina, small traces of handling consistent with age.

Portrait of Raimondo di Montecuccoli in armor with a marshal's staff. Dutch School.
Oil on canvas

Portrait of a military commander in armor with a marshal's staff.
In the portrait of the illustrious general Raimondo Montecuccoli, it can be observed that he still appears without the Order of the Golden Toson. This detail suggests that the portrait could be dated before 1664.
Raimondo Montecuccoli was a famous general and military strategist of the 17th century in the service of the Habsburg Empire. Born in 1609 in Italy, Montecuccoli fought in numerous European wars, distinguishing himself for his tactical and strategic abilities. He is best known for his victories during the Thirty Years' War and the war against the Turks. Montecuccoli is also remembered for his writings on military theory, which influenced subsequent generations of commanders. He died in 1680.
Montecuccoli came from a noble Italian family but chose to pursue a military career in the service of the Habsburg Empire. He studied in Vienna and fought in numerous battles and military campaigns, earning the trust of Emperor Leopold I.
Montecuccoli was known for his discipline, his ability to adapt to situations on the battlefield, and his skill in leading troops with cunning and determination.
Montecuccoli fought in many significant battles during the Thirty Years' War and the wars against the Turks. Some of his most famous battles include the Battle of Lens in 1648, where he achieved a decisive victory against French forces, and the Battle of Vezekény in 1664, where he defeated the Ottoman army. He faced adversaries such as the renowned French general Turenne and the great Turkish commander Kara Mustafa...
