About the Item

Samuel J. Woolf (American, 1880-1948) First Aid Station at Seicheprey Lithograph Sight: 11 x 14 1/2 in. Framed: 20 x 23 x 1 in. Signed lower right: S. J. Woolf Numbered lower left: 23/150 This print is based on Woolf 1918 oil painting: Front Line Dressing Station at Seicherprey, in the Army Art Collection. Painter, lithographer, illustrator Samuel Johnson Woolf, 1880-1948, was born in New York City. He studied with Kenyon Cox and George de Forest Brush at the Art Students League and National Academy of Design, both in New York City. Woolf was a frontline artist-correspondent for Time Magazine in Europe with the American Army during World War One, painting portraits of General John C. Pershing, commanding general of the U.S. forces, and General Joffre, of the French. Woolf was employed at the New York Times before going to Time. From 1924-1935, Woolf produced two hundred charcoal portraits for Time, including those of Charles Lindbergh, Walter P. Chrysler, John L. Lewis (United Mine Workers President), and Pope Pius XI. Woolf executed a pencil portrait of President Calvin Coolidge, in 1923, and a lithographic portrait of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt during World War Two. In 1906, Woolf painted a portrait of Mark Twain, then seventy years old. The artist's description of his experience of the famous author may be found on the internet at Twain Quotes (dot) com. Upon completion, the portrait was exhibited at the Society of American Artists, but Twain didn't like it. The painting is now in the collection of the Mark Twain House, Hartford, Connecticut. It was essentially forgotten until Mrs. Stiles Burpee conducted a search for it, based on finding a color lithograph of the portrait in her attic. Well-known art collector Thomas B. Clarke had purchased it for the collection of the Brook Club. Woolf exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Academy of Design, and New York Public Library, all in New York City; the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia; and the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C. Woolf's awards include the St. Louis Exposition, 1904; Hallgarten Prize, National Academy of Design, 1904; Appalachian Exposition, 1910; and the Paris Salon Medal, France, 1937. Herman Hyneman (American, 1849-1907) Untitled, c. 1880 Engraving Sight: 13 x 8 1/2 in. Framed: 26 1/2 x 20 1/2 x 3/4 in. Signed bottom The following is from Peter Jung who credits "a friend named Jeff Gold on Long Island." Herman N. Hyneman (1849 - 1907) was born in 1849 to one of the most prominent Jewish families in Philadelphia. Unlike most Jewish families of the time, his embraced and encouraged his artistic talent. In 1874, Hyneman followed his first cousin Moses Ezekiel, National Academy member, to Europe to study. They first went to Germany and then to France where Hyneman began eight years of study with Leon Bonnat, the French Master. In Paris, the twenty-five year old Hyneman resided in a studio building at 75 Boulevard Clichy, with expatriates Frederic Arthur Bridgeman, Charles Sprague Pearce, Milne Ramsey, and Edwin Blashfield. Hyneman was clearly exposed to the works of these more experienced artists, as well as that of Walter Gay. In 1879, one of Hyneman's genre paintings, entitled "Desdemona", was accepted into the Paris Salon. That painting received favorable reviews both in Europe, and later in Philadlephia where it was exhibited alongside the works of other Philadelphia Artists exhibiting at the Salon that included Thomas Eakins, Pearce, Edward May...
