"Lady Holding a Baby" - Woodblock Print on Laid Rice Paper

1975

About the Item

"Lady Holding a Baby" - Woodblock Print on Laid Rice Paper Elegant woodcut print by Stephen White (American, b. 1939). In an early example of White's signature style, a stylized, minimalist figure of a woman holds a baby over her shoulder. The woman has dark, wavy hair, and is wearing a brown polka-dot dress. The baby is created out of the negative space of the paper, as the background is a soft grey. Dated "1975" in the lower left corner. Signed and titled "Stephen White Lady Holing a Baby" in the lower right corner. Presented in a new off-white mat with foamcore backing. Mat size: 32"H x 24"W Paper size: 24.5"H x 16.75"W Stephen White (American, b. 1939) is an acclaimed artist living and practicing in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He is known for his textured paintings with gilt highlights that are inspired by ancient Byzantine techniques and Asian influences. He graduated from University of North Carolina’s art program in 1970, and began working as an artist immediately afterwards. White’s favorite model, a woman named Marian, has been the muse for the stylized female figures often depicted in White’s work throughout his career. She left such an impression on Stephen that he has created a career for himself by continuing to paint stylized figures based on Marian. His work has a distinct quality, making it universally recognizable. Whether working on wood panels, wood boxes, or glass, he begins with a quick sketch, primarily to indicate the position of the texture, which is applied next. Clear acrylic is used to achieve the texture found in the hair and headpieces of his female figures. After the faces are painted in and a bit of color added, the gold is applied.
