A luminous celebration of music, womanhood, and memory, “Cantate 51 de Bach pour les jours de lumière” was created by Théo Tobiasse in 1979 as part of his celebrated Le Femme series. This richly colored lithograph features the seated figure of a nude woman surrounded by symbolic vignettes — a violinist, a child embraced in a mother’s lap, and a menorah-like vessel rendered in bold, expressionist linework. THE ARTIST:
Théo Tobiasse (1927–2012) was a French-Israeli painter, printmaker, and master of lyrical figuration whose work blends personal memory, biblical imagery, and cultural identity. A survivor of Nazi-occupied France, Tobiasse developed a unique visual language marked by vibrant color, floating figures, and recurring motifs of musical instruments, mothers, lovers, and Jewish heritage. Often associated with the School of Paris, his work draws inspiration from Marc Chagall, Georges Rouault, and the emotional expressiveness of Expressionism.
Tobiasse’s works are held in major public and private collections worldwide, including the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, and the Jewish Museum in New York. His mixed-media practice and deeply symbolic imagery have earned him international acclaim among collectors of modern Jewish art and post-war European figuration.

Théo Tobiasse
Born in Palestine in 1927 and brought to Paris as a child, Theo Tobiasse created his earliest drawings before World War II. After the war, having spent the crucial years of his youth hiding from the Nazis in a Paris apartment, he became a successful commercial designer until 1961, when he decided to devote his full attention to painting. Tobiasse's style of painting is highly sophisticated. His technique is a painterly blend of surrealism, expressionism, and modern primitivism. His themes are literary, often biblical, and at times, erotic. His paintings seem to transcend history - fusing dreams, mythologies, biblical stories and his own past - into rich metaphors for the world of the present. An internationally acclaimed artist, Tobiasse's works are included in numerous private, corporate and museum collections worldwide.
