About the Item

Thomas Balfour Garrett, 'Search', monotype in colors, c. 1910, a unique impression. Signed and titled in pencil. A superb, painterly impression with fresh colors on off-white, wove paper, with margins (1 3/8 to 2 inches). Scattered very pale glue and ink stains in the margins, mostly well away from the image, otherwise in very good condition. Matted to museum standards, unframed. Image size 10 5/16 x 9 13/16 inches; sheet size 9 3/8 x 11 5/8 inches. ABOUT THE ARTIST Australian artist Thomas Balfour Garrett (1879-1952) began his art career after becoming disenchanted with his work as a minister of religion in Melbourne for what he perceived as the institutionalization of the church. Moving to Sydney to pursue his painting practice, he exhibited for the first time in 1929 at the age of fifty to receive wide recognition for his lyrical, romantic landscapes. Garrett continued to show regularly in Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide and became well known for his painterly, atmospheric monotype prints. The monotype medium employs the technique of painting on a glass or metal plate and applying the painted matrix onto paper. Garrett refined the method to his exacting standards, regularly adding oil paints to the watercolor or ink conventionally used in monotypes to achieve the qualities of depth and light for which his finely nuanced prints were acclaimed. Garrett remained loyal to his romantic impressionist vision throughout the 1930s and 1940s despite the development of modernist genres in Australia. His work is in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of South Australia, and the National Gallery of Victoria.

ABOUT THIS WORK In addition to her almost 80 celebrated modernist color linocuts, Sybil Andrews also worked in the monotype technique. She typically produced two or three impressions (or pulls) from each hand-painted plate, each proof unique in its qualities of color values and vibrancy. In 1933, Sybil Andrews and Cyril Power had an exhibition of their color monotypes and linocuts at the Redfern Gallery. Most of Andrews' monotypes were destroyed by a fire in an Ottawa gallery in 1959, and they now rarely come to the market.
