About the Item

"The hen that lays in the hen that pays" Screenprint on Paper Bold screenprint by Toni Carner (American, b. 1957). A large, patterned hen is sitting on the ground. There are five chicks around her, one of which is standing on her back. Although there are only two colors in this piece, the artist has cleverly used the white space of the paper to create additional detail. Numbered, titled, and signed along the bottom edge: "24/75 The hen that lays is the hen that pays Toni Carner" Presented in an aluminum frame. Frame size: 14.25"H x 17"W Image size: 10"H x 12.75"W Belmont artist Toni Carner, a native Californian from the San Joaquin Valley, is a graduate from the University of California, Berkley, 1963. She has pursued a dual career as serigrapher and art educator on the San Francisco peninsula. Her silk screen works have been shown and received awards in competitive exhibitions including the California State Fair and Exposition, Oklahoma National Print Competition, Central California Art League Annual and the De Anza Regional Print Competition. Her work is included in the 1971 yearbook, "California Graphics". Toni Carner's most recent award is the James D. Phelan Purchase award for the serigraph "The Virgin Sea" in the exhibit "Prints: California" on view in the Oakland Museum in 1975. Art Critic Thomas Albright of the San Francisco Chronicle spoke highly of this print in his review of the show. After the exhibit, the winners show travels to Santa Barbara where it will be hung for the summer in the Contemporary Graphics Center of the Santa Barbara Museum. At the same time she was one of 30 contemporary California printmakers selected for exhibit at Oxford University, England.
