About the Item

Tony Scherman (1950 - 2023) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. He is renowned internationally for his work, typically executed in encaustic, a mix of wax and oil (one of the most difficult mediums to work in). Scherman frequently alludes to the grandeur of past centuries, both in his subject matter and his technique of working with encaustic. The artist revived a tradition of working with this material that has been propelled through art history by a diverse number of canonical artists including Pieter Claesz, Caravaggio, and Cézanne. "My Girlfriend Ophelia" (Ophelia Raspberry) is a fantastic example of Scherman's mastery of encaustic and portraiture. Ophelia, the tragic character from Shakespeare's Hamlet, is one of Scherman's favorite muses. One could question whether the artist was haunted by this young woman and her demise. Ophelia is one of the best-known characters in Shakespeare's work. A key figure in Hamlet, she has been considered as a symbol of femininity, despite the obvious stereotypes regarding women and fragility. A noblewoman in Denmark, and a potential bride of Hamlet's, she goes mad and eventually drowns. While Scherman's palette is frequently moody, featuring dark backgrounds reminiscent of chiaroscuro, here his palette is soft and luminous. This unique monoprint is enhanced with a hand-painted encaustic overlay. The results are an ethereal, light-bathed composition and compelling portrait. Despite the warm tones of raspberry, peach, and tangerine there is something unsettled or suspicious in this young woman's regard. Scherman’s work can be found in nearly every public collection in Canada, as well as many international museums including LACMA (Los Angeles) and Centre Pompidou (Paris). Questions about this piece? My Mummy Jocasta
By Tony Scherman
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Tony Scherman (b. 1950) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. He is renowned internationally for his work, typically executed in the highly temperamental medium of encaustic, which is a wax-based paint equivalent. Scherman's moody palette and sumptuous portraits (whether contemporary, historical or allegorical) reference a range of masters, including Goya and Manet, yet his works are visceral and contemporary. Scherman's allusions to both history, and the history of visual art, are constants in his oeuvre. This work, which depicts Oedipus' mother/lover Jocasta in carnal ecstasy, comes from one of the artist's most recognizable series, The Seduction of Oedipus. "Oedipus Rex" is an ancient text...

Emerson’s figures draw reference from archetypes old and new, from Artemis to the modern day super model, each solitary figure, an allegory of her own fantasy. Interested in surface, the interplay between photography and painting. Emerson’s works are playful constructs; Photography is used, not as a device for capturing reality but for creating romanticised optical illusions. Inspired by her love of theatre, performance, shrines and rituals, she uses lighting, costume, set and prop making, alongside printmaking and painting to create other worldly one off pieces. Her photography is inspired by both the drama of the baroque, and ethereal qualities of Pre Raphaelite works. Other important influences include late medieval and renaissance paintings, Japanese prints, and magical realist literature. Emerson’s screen...
