Anthony Walker (British, 1726–1765) The Mowhawk Indian Warrior with his Tomax, scalping Knive &c. • Mid 18th Century copper plate engraving on laid paper • Sheet, ca. 20.7 x 12.7 cm • Presented in a later, vintage/somewhat tired simple mount, ca. 30 x 21 cm (Visible image ca. 19.5 x 11 cm) • Sheet is mounted along top edge with a strip of acid free paper tape • Good condition, however with some very slight foxing present Worldwide shipping for this object is complimentary - There are no additional charges for handling & delivery. Anthony Walker was a print maker, born in the year of 1726 in Thirsk, Yorkshire and died in 1765 in London at the age of only 39. He drafted and engraved a wide range of subjects matters, such as detailed historical, interior, biblical and travel scenes. This iconographic image of the Mohawk warrior is well known and sought after – unfortunately I don’t know from which publication this portrait was taken. Walker’s work is widely traded and collected privately as well as by public institutions – For example several of his prints are held by the MET in New York.
