Historia de Garibaldi - Group of 48 Original Woodcuts - Late 19th Century

Late 19th Century

About the Item

Historia de Garibaldi is an original alleluia, with 48 xylographed vignettes on paper illustrating the eroic deeds of Giuseppe Garibaldi from " A Italia ilena de gloria de garibaldi la historia" to " Libre de azares de guerra se embarca para Inglaterra". Each blach and white xylograph is accompanied by an explicative capture in Spanish and in rhymh. It is a rare and precious green-colored sheet of a Spanish Review, published by the publishing house of Madrid, Libreria y casa Editorial Hernando at the ned of XIXcentury. In good conditions, except a usual yellowing of the paper above all on the edges and visible signs of time, rips and abrasions of the thin paper glued on black cardboard. Alleluia is a sheet of paper printed on one side that contains a series of vignettes - usually forty-eight - on the lines of which verses usually appear which allude to the scene represented. Although they can be understood as a genre of popular press, constituting a source of singular interest in the study of graphic images in general, we must not forget that, in turn, they constitute primitive forms of reading with images, directly related to sheets of string and intended primarily for a child or an illiterate public. This artwork is shipped from Italy. Under existing legislation, any artwork in Italy created over 70 years ago by an artist who has died requires a licence for export regardless of the work’s market price. The shipping may require additional handling days to require the licence according to the final destination of the artwork.
