The Library - Original Etching - Early 19th Century

Early 19th Century

About the Item

The Library is an original modern artwork realized in the first decades of the XIX Century. Original colored Etching on paper. A long inscription is present on the lower margin. On the upper side the number XXXVI is present. Mint conditions. Beautiful old paper engraving depicting a genre scene. In the center of the composition two men speak while another male figure listens to them and raises his hand. On the right side we see a female figure intent on reading on a desk. The scene is inserted inside a library with very high arches and columns with a smooth shaft. The books are large volumes that occupy the shelves from bottom to top both in the foreground and beyond the arch. A beautiful inscription is present at the bottom: "La Libreria non fa l'Uomo Letterato" ("The library does not make the man of letters"). The work is part of a series of satirical engravings concerning the uses and customs of the century. In this case he is telling us that the owner of a library is not necessarily a cultured man.
