About the Item

The Yale Football Team and Groups of Spectators at the Championship Game between Yale and Harvard which shows the eleven member Yale football team seated and wearing their blue and white uniforms with a blue Y on their jerseys. Each team members name is displayed in correspondence to their seat. The surrounding spectators are divided by their team affiliation. Published by Harper’s Weekly as a supplement in the December 10th 1887 issue. An original double page hand colored wood engraving created from a photograph taken specifically for the Weekly and in very good condition with the original publication center fold and one repair in the top margin. The first Harvard-Yale game was played in 1875 before a crowd of 2000. The next year, Harvard, Columbia, Yale, Princeton and Pennsylvania formed the Intercollegiate Football Association. The Association agreed to use the Harvard rules and agreed that the two strongest teams would meet each year on Thanksgiving Day in New York City in a game that would determine the championship. A really fantastic piece of college football history.

The artist lists himself as an "intaglio-chromographic and Electrographic Engraver". This is a fine example of American calligraphic and stipple engraving. The face of the portrait is based on Stuart's " Antheaeum " painting surrounded by swirls and elaborate calligraphic design typical of this artist. This is the second state, according to Charles Hart's "Catalogue of the Engraved Portraits of Washington...

Richard Hamilton began studying James Joyce's novel Ulysses (1922) during his national service in 1947. Hamilton was inspired by the idea of illustrating Joyce’s complex, experimental novel in and began making sketches the following year, only to put the project to one side in 1950, with no publisher willing to front the exorbitant cost of resetting the novel for illustrations. It was not until 1981 that he made the decision to create one illustration for each of the novel’s eighteen chapters, and a nineteenth image – a portrait of one of the novel’s main protagonists, Leopold Bloom – destined as a frontispiece. He conceived these images as large intaglio...
