The Samurai Genta Kajiwara - Japanese Woodblock Diptych in Ink on Paper

1866

About the Item

The Samurai Genta Kajiwara - Japanese Woodblock Diptych in Ink on Paper Boldly colored woodblock by Utagawa Yoshitora (Japanese, active c.1840-1880). On the left side of the panel, an actor depicting the famous samurai Genta Kajiwara is shown in a brightly patterned robe with plum blossoms. Behind him, there is a silhouette of a building and a lantern. On the right side, another person holds a rod above their head, with several small oval objects flying through the air, from the right panel towards the left. This is most likely a scene from a kabuki play, as Genta Kajiwara was a well-known historical figure, and was portrayed in many stories. Presented in new off-white mats wit foamcore backing. Total size: 21"H x 32"W Each mat: 21"H x 16"W Each paper: 14.5"H x 9.75"W
