About the Item

Estate stamped, verso, for Victor Di Gesu (American, 1914-1988) and created circa 1950. A substantial monotype showing a young woman seated, her kimono casually open, and brushing her hair while directly regarding the viewer. Winner of the Prix Othon Friesz, Victor di Gesu first attended the Los Angeles Art Center and the Chouinard Art School before moving to Paris where he studied with Andre L’Hote and Yves Brayer at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. While in France, Di Gesu exhibited extensively, including at the Louvre, the Exposition des Artistes Étrangères, the Grand Palais of the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Arts Décoratifs. Moving to Spain, he attended Barcelona's Escuela de Bellas Artes before furthering his studies at Studio Hinna in Rome. On his return to California, he worked beside notable American Modernists including F. Tolles Chamberlain and Maynard Jepson. Already a gifted colorist, Di Gesu combined his classical training with research into the developing scientific field of color theory, allowing him to paint with a consistently vivid, yet harmonious, color palette. His mature works, while reminiscent of Matisse and Gauguin, retain a verve and spontaneity that remains uniquely his own. A prolific artist, he was the recipient of numerous medals and juried awards, both in the United States and France. Back in California, Victor di Gesu continued to exhibit widely and with success, including at the San Francisco Museum of Art, the San Francisco Art Association, the Monterey Peninsula Museum of Art, the Carmel Art Association, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Woman in a Red Kimono – 10-11-22, Drawing, Pencil/Colored Pencil on Paper

Prankster This colored pencil drawing ‘Woman in a Red Kimono – 10-11-22’ answers the most frequently asked question of late. I thought this prank of the red kimono title given to monochrome drawings would be appreciated. However, there were many that took the bait and mailed me with regard to the total absence of red. To satisfy their whim down I finally made this drawing. Hmm, of course satisfying my own inner urge to return to colored pencils may be the cause as well. I always wanted to make something similar to a previous drawing, called ‘Julia – 11-09-18’. That one exceeded my expectations and the divisionalist result I found very exciting. In this one I skipped the cubist styling though. Hatching up As you can see the drawing was done in hatched strokes, deviating from the execution of the Louise Brooks drawing. Before 2015 I exclusively worked with hatching until I discovered Bristol paper allowing me to study smooth gradients. There was this one thing on my wish list...
