About the Item

This artwork Titled "Wind Chimes #2" 1983 in a color off set lithograph by renown Chinese/American artist Wai Ming A.K.A Lo Hing Kwok, b.1938. It is hand signed an inscribed A.C (Hors Commerce) in pencil by the artist. The image size is 30.25 x 22.75 inches, sheet size is 32.75 x 25.25 inches. It is in excellent condition, has never been framed. About the artist: Wai Ming, was born in Canton, South China on November 11, 1938, the son of a school master with nine children. Extremely poor as a child, he was raised in Hong Kong enduring many hardships amidst a chaotic environment of war and refugee settlements. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work in. His primary interest being to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974. There, he experienced initial resistance from galleries and the official art world for a variety of reasons, but was ultimately embraced by dealer Jack Swanson only five months after his arrival. The four paintings that he displayed at Swanson Art Gallery for the first time in 1975 were all sold within the first day. Since then, not only has the demand for his work grown steadily, but he is acknowledged by many as one of the Bay Area's leading artist. His original oil paintings and prints are admired and collected by people throughout the world.

Artist Comments
Standing before a vast sunlit valley, an elder cradles a baby while holding a prayer wheel in his other hand. Layered glazes and textured brushwork render the man’s weathered face and the child’s soft skin in striking contrast. Beaded ornaments gleam against heavy garments, while warm light and an expansive sky evoke the quiet strength of faith, continuity, and tradition. Painted in oil with classical realism, the work unites cultural depth with timeless technique.

About the Artist
Artist David Qiyi Liu paints realist works in oil, blending traditions of naturalism, neoclassicism, and elements of photorealism and impressionism. “I create this work because I believe painting has the power to honor life with care and to reveal the quiet poetry of the world around us,” says David. His subjects range from portraiture and Tibetan life to landscapes and still lifes, all reflecting his reverence for both individuality and universality. Influenced by masters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer, Velázquez, and Andrew Wyeth, he strives to unite technical precision with emotional resonance. After receiving a Fine Art degree in 1977 and a Master’s in Oil Painting in 1988, David taught for more than thirty years in China before moving to the United States in 2022. He now works from his Flushing, New York studio, where morning light fills his space with clarity and calm. Outside of painting, he enjoys studying original works in museums, exploring art books, and guiding students in their creative growth.
